A lot of people hear about shows on social media, and since klance fans, or shippers generally, make up the largest part of the fanbase, all any outsiders were hearing was the distorted facts from people pushing their shipping agenda and acting as if Shiro was still with Adam/would get back together with him, that Shiro's feelings for Adam would make Lance realize he was bi and in love with Keith (just like the red and blue stars and the bonding moment foretold!), or Sheith shippers freaking out over the fact Keith was paralleled with Shiro's ex and taking that as proof they would become canon in s7. Fans twisted that to mean "LGBT is definitely coming" as far back as S1, and Klance shippers (again!) spread that Keith and Lance were a couple-so many people I know have told me they started watching the show because Klance fans told them it was canon or nearly canon. Every single time at a panel someone asked about ships, or LGBT rep (pretty much always Klance fans, from, what i saw, but i havent seen recordings of every panel), the EPs and staff said "they were trying but didnt want to confirm there was any". They didnt know if they would be allowed to make any of the main characters queer, and didnt want to promise otherwise if they couldn't deliver.

The eyecatches were bad, and there was one tweet by the official VLD twitter ("We'll meet Adam, Shiro's significant other, in S7"), that was ill advised, imo, that people took to mean that Adam would be in more of S7, forgetting that 7.1 was part of S7, and that all of the tweets during SDCC were in the context pf talking about 7.1 as if the public hadnt seen it yet.Īnd the showrunners only ever said when asked about LGBT rep that they were "fighting for it" and to wait because if they could they would. The EPs never promised he would be in more episodes, and made every discussion about him center on Shiro. You know why people got invested in Adam/Shiro? Either because they liked the potential, or, mostly, because it shut down Shiro/Keith, and so Klance shippers jumped all over it. That account is NOT FROM THE STAFF, thats from angry fans. But I'm having trouble seeing it this late into the show. I will be over the moon if Shiro gets a new boyfriend and he gets a happy ending.

And the few character that DO represent you are always always ALWAYS are killed off or doomed to live the rest of their life in solitary misery. I don't think straight people can truly understand what it's like to live your entire life almost never seeing a love story you can relate to. So many casual viewers didn't even pick up on it and that's just such a shame.Īnd yes, it hurts that we gays never get get to ever see a happily ever after. I really really wish they could have made Shiro more explicitly gay within the show. Fck anyone who tries to make it about that. But yeah the situation was definitely a let down. If the LD showrunners said there would have been little to no LGBT rep in this show, a number of these fans would not have bothered watching LD.ĮDIT: This Twitter thread from someone who apparently is/was close to the LD project explains.well. I don't believe I've ever seen these particular thumbnails on my Netflix account.which interestingly enough currently has a thumbnail featuring Shiro and Allura for the show.Ī number of these fans were more fans of representation and less of the series. People were expecting a developing relationship between the two based on the thumbnails. The folks at Netflix should shoulder a lot of the blame for deliberately misleading folks with the Shiro-Adam thumbnails. To them it was the overused "bury-your-gay" trope in action again. Adam being snuffed out really hit people hard. Reading the posts there, three things become painfully apparent.Ī number of folks became very emotionally involved with both Shiro and his relationship with Adam. I've noticed that the "sucky" VLD staff actually opened up a mailbox on their Twitter site to allow fans to express their feelings about the Shiro-Adam controversy.
